Decision Guide

Which Live Cell Imager Is Right for Your Lab?

The right system depends on your assay requirements, budget and workflow. Here is an honest recommendation for each scenario.

✓ Best for most labs
zenCELL owl

Your assays are brightfield-based and you need 24 wells monitored simultaneously, transparent pricing, no annual fees and a system that actually fits inside your incubator. Additionally, 50+ publications validate the system for confluency, migration, cytotoxicity and spheroid imaging.

→ If fluorescence is essential
Incucyte S3 or Axion Omni

Your research requires multi-channel fluorescence imaging, GFP reporters or multiplexed assays — and budget is less critical. Incucyte S3 has the largest validated assay library. Axion Omni is more affordable with cloud integration.

→ If confocal quality is needed
KEYENCE BZ-X800

Your research requires optical sectioning, Z-stacks, high-resolution tissue imaging or 3D analysis. Furthermore you have a dedicated microscopy budget and a fixed benchtop location. KEYENCE is a full research microscope — a different category entirely.

Live Cell Imager Comparison — What to Look For

What is a live cell imager?

A live cell imager is a microscope system designed to observe living cells continuously over time — inside the incubator, without disruption. Unlike conventional microscopy that requires removing cells for observation, modern in-incubator live cell imagers image automatically at defined intervals, generating timelapse data, confluency measurements and cell kinetics without any hands-on time.

Brightfield vs. fluorescence live cell imaging

The most important decision when choosing a live cell imager is whether you need fluorescence capability. Brightfield live cell imaging — as used by zenCELL owl — requires no labels, no phototoxicity concerns and covers the majority of routine applications: confluency monitoring, scratch assay, cytotoxicity and spheroid imaging. Fluorescence live cell imaging adds GFP reporters, viability dyes and multiplexed analysis — at significantly higher cost and complexity.

Total cost of ownership

Purchase price is only part of the equation. Additionally, annual software licences, cloud subscriptions, mandatory service contracts and consumables add to the real cost. zenCELL owl has no annual fees — software, firmware updates and ImageJ integration are included in the purchase price. Incucyte S3 requires an annual licence on top of the ~€220,000 purchase price.

Simultaneous wells — why it matters

The number of wells a live cell imager can monitor simultaneously is critical for parallel experiments. zenCELL owl images all 24 wells at the same time point — every well receives an image simultaneously. Systems that scan sequentially introduce timing variability between wells. Furthermore, 24 simultaneous channels enables proper control groups and biological replicates within a single experiment.

In-incubator vs. benchtop live cell imaging

Traditional live cell imaging systems like Incucyte S3 and KEYENCE BZ-X800 sit outside the incubator — cells must be transported for imaging, introducing environmental stress. In-incubator systems like zenCELL owl, Axion Omni and CellCyte X eliminate this by placing the imaging device directly inside the CO₂ incubator. As a result, cells remain at stable temperature and CO₂ throughout the entire experiment.

Pricing transparency in live cell imaging

Only zenCELL owl and Incucyte S3 publish their prices openly. Axion Omni, CYTENA CellCyte X and Blue-Ray Biotech EzScope 101 all require a quote request. Price opacity makes total cost of ownership comparison difficult — we believe transparent pricing is a basic courtesy to researchers and procurement teams with defined budgets.
