The problem – and the solution

Every chamber opening
compromises your experiment

O₂ levels spike to atmospheric levels the moment the door opens. Recovery takes 30–60 minutes. zenCELL owl eliminates this entirely.

Without zenCELL owl
Opening chamber for manual imaging causes O₂ to spike to 21%
30–60 minutes recovery time per observation
Reoxygenation artifacts in cell behavior data
Limited time points – imaging is too disruptive to do frequently
No continuous data – gaps between manual observations
Higher contamination risk with every opening
With zenCELL owl
+Chamber stays sealed – O₂ levels remain perfectly stable
+Zero recovery time – imaging is continuous
+True physiological hypoxic conditions throughout experiment
+Continuous imaging at defined intervals – hours, days or weeks
+Complete dataset – no gaps, no missed events
+Sealed system – contamination risk remains minimal

Setup

Ready in minutes –
four steps to hypoxic monitoring

The compact size and single flat ribbon USB-C cable make zenCELL owl straightforward to integrate into any hypoxic incubator setup.

01
Place inside chamber

zenCELL owl (180 × 180 × 105 mm, 1.5 kg) fits on any standard shelf inside your hypoxic incubator without requiring reconfiguration.

02
Route flat ribbon cable

The thin USB-C flat ribbon cable exits via the incubator cable feedthrough port, maintaining the sealed O₂-controlled environment.

03
Set hypoxic conditions

Seal the chamber, set your target O₂ level (1–5%), start the experiment. zenCELL owl begins imaging immediately without warm-up.

04
Monitor from your PC

Track confluence, morphology and cell count remotely, 24/7 – without ever opening the hypoxic chamber again during the experiment.

Technical note – cable feedthrough

Most modern hypoxic incubators (Eppendorf Galaxy, Baker Ruskinn InVivo2, Thermo Scientific Heracell VIOS, Panasonic PHCbi) include a dedicated cable feedthrough port for sensor cables and monitoring equipment. The zenCELL owl flat ribbon USB-C cable fits through standard ports without compromising the sealed environment.

For incubators without built-in feedthroughs, standard silicone cable grommets provide an equivalent seal. Contact us to verify compatibility with your specific model before ordering.

Research applications

What zenCELL owl enables
under hypoxic conditions

Hypoxia is central to cancer biology, cardiovascular research, stem cell differentiation and wound healing. zenCELL owl provides continuous imaging across all these fields.

01
Tumor Hypoxia Research

Monitor how cancer cells adapt, migrate and proliferate under low O₂ conditions. Track morphological changes and epithelial-mesenchymal transition in real time without disruption.

Oncology
02
Ischemia / Reperfusion

Study cardiac and neural cell survival under ischemic stress. Monitor cell death kinetics continuously and capture recovery dynamics after reoxygenation without data gaps.

Cardiovascular
03
Stem Cell Differentiation

Hypoxia drives key stem cell differentiation pathways. Monitor morphological changes and confluence continuously without disturbing the hypoxic niche.

Stem Cell Biology
04
Wound Healing under Hypoxia

Run automated scratch assays under defined O₂ levels. Compare migration rates at 1%, 3% and 5% O₂ simultaneously – 24 conditions in one experiment.

Migration Assay
05
Hypoxic Drug Screening

Test drug efficacy under physiologically relevant O₂ levels. Many compounds behave differently in hypoxia versus normoxia. Capture this difference continuously across 24 wells.

Drug Discovery
06
Cytotoxicity under Hypoxia

Measure cytotoxicity in hypoxic conditions – track confluence loss and morphology changes under low O₂ in real time without endpoint assays or chamber disruption.
